Coca at the heart of a new call for boycott
Dernière mise à jour : 30 nov. 2021
After talking about the Cristiano Ronaldo scandal during a conference, Coca was also in trouble earlier this year. When we’re looking for the key concepts about Coca during the last 12 months, one is Georgia. Why? Because there is a call for a boycott that comes from Georgia, in the USA.
On the 26th March 2021, the government of Georgia has signed a law, the Election Integrity Act of 2021, which is reducing the period for absentee voting, a procedure favored by African Americans, and is prohibiting the distribution of water or food in front of polling places, while lines were longer in black neighborhoods. The State has been accused of trying to deny or reduce the right to vote to Afro-Americans.
During the last weeks before this date, activists have been putting pressure on the large companies based in Georgia, including Coca-Cola, to use their influence to oppose the bill. Coca-Cola has an important power in the Georgian State due to its generous political donations. As a matter of fact, since 2018, Coca-Cola has donated more than 35$ to the bill’s sponsors. Coke has reported a few days after the law was passed that they were “disappointed” by the law, while they did nothing to avoid it, even under the pressure of activists. After that, a boycott movement appears on social media with the #BlackVotersMatter (referring to the #BlackLivesMatter a few months before).
We can see on this graph that there was an intense boycott movement on social media just before and after the law was signed. Moreover, we can see that only with Twitter, there are 108,560 mentions, compared to 112,278 mentions with all types of media because of many social and political movements (#MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter..) are emerging from social media. Twitter is nowadays an important tool of denunciation.
When we’re looking at the top hashtags about Coca during the last 12 months, the #BoycottCoke is number 7, which shows the importance of the movement.
Regarding the key concepts about the “Coca boycott”, the majority come from this scandal.
Finally, as we can imagine, the sentiment of people is in majority negative when we talk about the Coke boycott. It shows that people were involved in the movement. We focused on the mentions on Twitter because the majority of them come from social networks.
